ABOUT ROLLER DERBY
Roller derby is a fast-paced, full-contact sport played on quad roller skates. The sport dates back to the 1930s, peaked in popularity in the 1950s, and had a modern revival in the early 2000s.
Today, roller derby is played by over 1,250 amateur leagues worldwide and was under consideration for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
PLAYERS
Teams are composed of three types of players — Jammer, Pivot, and Blockers.
BLOCKERS
Blockers are positional skaters that form the pack. There can be four Blockers from each team with one allowed to be the Pivot Blocker. Blockers never score points.
JAMMER
The Jammer is the only player that can score points. In each jam, the first Jammer to break through the pack becomes lead and earns the ability to call off the jam.
PIVOT
A Pivot is a special type of a Blocker that can become Jammer. The Pivot wears the striped helmet and becomes Jammer only when the Jammer passes the star helmet cover.
GAME PLAY
LET'S JAM!
Bouts are divided into two 30-minute periods, and within those periods, into units of play called “Jams.”
Jams can last up to two minutes and are called off by the lead Jammer.
SCORE!
Jammers earn points for passing opposing blockers. But points cannot be earned on the first pass. The first pass only determines
Lead Jammer status.
PENALTY
Roller derby is a full-contact sport but play that is unsafe or illegal may result in a Skater being assessed a penalty, which is served by sitting in the Penalty Box for 30 seconds of Jam time.
